Straight-Through vs Valved Quick Release Couplings is a practical engineering guide for OEMs, installers and maintenance teams working with compressed air, pneumatic and industrial fluid connections.
The valve arrangement determines what happens to the media when the connection is separated. That affects air loss, fluid spillage, pressure retention, operator behaviour and the suitability of the connection for a particular circuit.
Single shut-off
A single shut-off coupling normally closes the valved side when disconnected while the mating plug is open. This arrangement is widely used for compressed air and other services where shutting off the supply side is required.
Double shut-off
A double shut-off arrangement valves both halves of the connection. It is useful where retaining media on both sides and reducing loss or spillage at disconnection is important.
Straight-through
Straight-through connections have an open flow path without an automatic shut-off valve in the connection. They can provide a less restricted path but the circuit must be isolated or otherwise controlled before disconnection.
Select by circuit behaviour
Choose the valve arrangement according to what must happen when the line is disconnected. Flow, retained pressure, media loss and operating procedure are all relevant.
Information to confirm before ordering
- Media or service.
- Normal and maximum working pressure.
- Operating temperature.
- Required flow or equipment demand.
- Coupling/plug profile where an existing system is involved.
- Thread, hosetail or tube termination.
- Body and seal material requirements.
- Any safety, cleanliness or environmental requirements.
Technical support from Kee Connections
For product selection, see the Kee Connections quick release coupling range. Where operator-controlled pressure release is required, see Safety Quick Release Couplings. If an installed connection is unidentified, send clear photographs, measurements and operating details to Kee Connections for technical review.
Frequently asked questions
Can I select a coupling from the thread size alone?
No. Thread size identifies the equipment-side termination, not the mating quick-release profile. Valve arrangement, profile, flow, pressure, media and materials also need to be confirmed.
Should an existing coupling and plug be treated as a matched system?
Yes. Unless compatibility is positively established, treat the two halves as a defined connection system. Similar appearance is not sufficient evidence of interchangeability.
Can Kee Connections help identify an existing connection?
Yes. Clear side-on photographs, visible markings, plug-profile measurements and details of the application provide a useful starting point for technical identification.
